Current Tasting Notes
The 2009 Chardonnay has a crystalline mid yellow hue. The nose offers luscious aromas of white chocolate, cashew nuts and ripe peach followed by notes of pink grapefruit and white flowers. The palate welcomes with bright acid balanced by mouth filling rich flavours of ripe nectarine, nougat and toast crust. A silky fi nish with appealing flavour intensity.
Vineyard Notes
We carefully selected the grapes for our 2009 Chardonnay from vineyard blocks located in the Brancott, Fairhall, Ben Morven and Central Wairau Valley sub-regions. These vineyards grow a mix of our preferred low yielding Mendoza and B95 clones and the vines excel in their alluvial soils. Each site produces a unique flavour profile and allows for an assemblage of a complex and balanced wine.
Production Notes
Overall the summer was a little cooler and wetter than usual for Marlborough. We had a warm and sunny start to the growing season but it was followed by some cool periods in the new year. These cool sunny temperatures and dry weather allowed for slow ripening – and harvest progressed smoothly with all varieties and sites picked within a month – a first for us at Cloudy Bay. Although some rainfall during the season caused concern for botrytis in the region, we harvested fruit in excellent condition and at optimum ripeness. We picked our vineyards according to their fl avour profi le, commencing on the 1st of April and fi nishing on the 20th. This was two weeks later than usual – the slow ripening of our fruit during the 2009 growing season offered us intense and pure fruit fl avours and we were delighted with the fruit quality received. Brix levels at harvest were between 22.2 to 23.9.
Winemaker Notes
After hand picking and gentle pressing, the wine was 100% barrel fermented in French oak. The wine remained in barrel, 20% of it new, for one year prior to bottling and enjoyed regular lees stirring and about 70% malolactic fermentation. The fi nal blend was determined in May 2010 and bottled the following July. Final analysis of the wine showed it to have a pH of 3.30, TA of 6.96 g/L, RS of 2.0g/L and an alcohol of 14.0%.
