Our People

On the list of Cloudy Bay’s most ardent supporters, Yang Shen comes at the top. Born in Chengdu, in China’s Sichuan province, he fondly remembers his first taste of wine, a bottle from China’s oldest wine estate ChangYu. But when luxury department store Galeries Lafayette opened in his hometown in 1997, he got his first taste of European wine. His future began to take shape.
Yang travelled to France and learnt winemaking in Montpellier and wine marketing in Bordeaux. He graduated from Université Montesquieu-Bordeaux in 2004 and was picked to become the founder and managing director of Domaine Chandon China in 2011. Launching the first vintage to over six hundred guests at the opening ceremony
was a keystone moment.
In 2016, armed with experience, knowledge, and fluency in three languages, Yang found himself at the helm of Cloudy Bay. As Estate Director, he is charged with ensuring Cloudy Bay remains a beacon of quality for Marlborough wine. More than what goes into every bottle, it’s also about ensuring the Cloudy Bay story is told with passion in every country
it can be found.
It’s a task he relishes, enjoying nothing more than sharing a bottle with friends and family. He’ll also tell you that while pretty much any food pairs well with Cloudy Bay, there’s one thing that stands out: fresh New Zealand scampi.
